WORK DESCRIPTION: 

Still from the film ‘Oyfn veg shteyt a boym’ (30 min., 2017), a personal documentary about a musical encounter in Amsterdam between a Jewish man and a young female artist. During the search for the man’s family history and his own gender identity, an intimate bond grows between the two of them, while Jewish music plays a key role.

ARTIST BIO:

Vita Soul Wilmering works as an artist, film maker, performer and musician. She currently lives in Amsterdam and works as an artist in resident at De Ateliers. Starting her projects from a basis in documentary film, Vita works with video, installation art, music and other media. She considers the performative space which a camera evokes an instrument to start friendships and to communicate on an intimate level with the people she works with, by integrating the making process in the work itself. Through the use of fictional or performative elements, she makes people shift between roles and reality, to visualize questions such as how one reclaims a personal or familial history, embedded in an environment which is constantly ‘under construction’. The projects could be meeting spaces, whereas the individual stories extend beyond the edge of the works, since the emphasize is on the way of finding common languages.
